Funeral tomorrow for Shan rebel “minister”
Funeral for Khun Lu aka Lionel Khunka, “Deputy Foreign Minister” for the “Shan Government,” who passed away in Chiangmai on Monday, 12 January, will be held on Thursday, 15 January, according to its “information minister” Suwan Soikhamseng.
14 January 2009
His remains would be moved from the Wat Papao Shan temple at 13:00 tomorrow to
the nearby Paphaeng temple to be cremated.
Born on 11 May 1938, Khun Lu joined the movement
led by Sao Hso Hkan Hpa aka Tiger Yawnghwe, after it was formed on the
Chiangrai border on 25 March 2005. His father Khun Ka served as a minister at
the Hsenwi palace during Prince Sao Hom Hpa’s reign, when the Federated Shan
States as the Shan State was then known, was still a separate entity
from Burma.
Known as a brilliant student at the Rangoon
University, he had worked at the Thai
embassy in Rangoon before coming to Thailand.
He died of liver cancer.
His funeral is expected to be attended by most of the “cabinet” members
residing in Thailand.
The formation of the “Shan Government” and its declaration of independence on
17 April 2005 remain a controversial topic both inside and outside the Shan
community to this day.
