Burmese migrant workers mark May Day in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI-May 6. Hundreds of Burmese migrant workers marked May Day in Chiang Mai on May 1, 2014, celebrated worldwide to honor workers. Labor organizations, including the Migrant Workers Federation (MWF), Worker Solidarity Association (WSA), and Migrant Labor Network marched to the Chiang Mai City Hall and submitted an appeal letter to the caretaker Prime Minister and Ministry of Labor through the Chiang Mai governor. The groups called for the Royal Thai Government to ratify ILO convention No.87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize Convention, 1948) and No.98 (Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining Convention, 1949), to crackdown on migrant registration brokers and to review the daily minimum wage.

SSA-North marks golden jubilee at its headquarters

Chiang Mai-April 24. The Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) has marked its golden jubilee celebration at its headquarters Wanhai, Kehsi township, southern Shan State, attended by SNLD chairman Hkun Htun Oo and thousands of people from across Shan State. The celebration started on April 23 and is scheduled to end on April 25, 2014.

SNLD holds annual meeting in Shan State capital

The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) has begun its annual meeting in the Shan State capital Taunggyi, attended by about 150 members.  The annual meeting was scheduled to discuss merging of the two Shan political parties SNLD known as ‘Tiger Head’ and Shan Nationalities Democratic Party ‘White Tiger’, and whether or not to contest in the general election in 2015. The meeting started on March 24 and is scheduled to end on March 26, 2014.

Emerging women leaders of Burma featured abroad

We Women foundation launched their documentary “Emerging Women of Burma” at Documentary Arts Asia gallery on March 14, 2014 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where over 50 people participated the event. The documentary features 7 outstanding women, including a Shan MP, Nang Wa Nu, and highlights the hardship of women in Burma and. The documentary is part of campaign to raise funds to the education of women of Burma.

SHAN in collaboration with Burma News International (BNI) held the second ethnic media conference in the Shan State capital Taunggyi, attended by Shan State Chief Minister Sao Aung Myat, Deputy Minister of Information U Pike Htwe, civil organizations and journalists from various news agencies. The conference started on March 4 and is scheduled to end on March 6, 2014.
