Shan-Kayan peace conference brings optimism: SNLD

Lashio Trust-building for Peace conference, 20-22 March, has been credited for constructing a good foundation for building relationships not only among ethnic nationalities themselves but between ethnic people and the government, said Sai Leik, spokesperson for the conference organizing committee and Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD).

The Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) wrote a letter to U Aung Min, Vice Chairman of Union Peacemaking Working Committee (UPWC) to clarify the terms of agreement in militarily active zones which is ambiguous for both sides and creates misunderstanding as clashes between the Burma army and RCSS/SSA are erupting now and then.

It is reported that there were 10 political parties, and 11 armed groups attended the Shan-Kayah Trust-building for Peace conference at Lashio which hold for 3 days on March 20, 21, and 22. Apart from this, there were also 22 other organizations attended as observers. Following the conference, Press Release was held at 4:00 pm to 4:50 pm local time.

It is reported that today (March 22) the Shan Kayah Trust-building for peace conference was concluded with the discussion on women role in the peace process.

“Today women representatives from invited organizations spoke up.Nang HsengNoung, representingShan women emphasized the need of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the peace process,” one of the representatives who attended the conference told the SHAN.

The SHAN has already reported (in Shan and Burmese) about the shooting incident took place in the Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 331 Burma army based in Tachileik. Toward the end of February there occurred a rare incident shooting in the Burma army military compound in Tachileik, Shan State, opposite Mae Sai, Thailand. According to the local sources who are familiar with the Burma army circle, the incident was related to methamphetamines ceased from drug dealers in which disputes occurred in unequal sharing among the top military elites.
